REVIEW: STRAWBERRY SIREN AND RURAL RANGA - PUSSY PLAY MASTERCLASS

And now for something completely different. I must have looked like the strangest, and keenest person in the room taking notes at a female masturbation seminar, but I promise you I am a journalist.

Week one of the festival it was Wank Bank Masterclass but week two saw burlesque legend Strawberry Siren take the stage in this informative, interactive and playful masterclass of original techniquesto perfect the art of mastering yours or your partners pleasure. You may have seen them on ABC’s Luke Warm Sex, on Gogglebox or heard about it on triple j’s hack, the shows have featured at Adelaide Fringe Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, and picks up on Rural Ranga Adam Semour’s previous life as a “happy ending masseuse’ in New York.

Under your seat was a show bag, containing a how to guide on the ‘moves’ and two containers of coloured play dough for you to carefully construct a replica vulva, for a back to basics lesson in self loving. The room is set up strangely like a cooking demonstration, and has that feel to the interactive nature of the show,, as you participate along with the show – you only get back what you put in.

Enough beating around the bush, let’s meet our hostess with the mostest, the ‘fairy godmother of orgasms’, Strawberry Siren. Cousin to Rural Ranga and joining the family business of teaching pleasure, the former Mormon, preachers daughter and Miss Burlesque Australia 2013 is a dynamic, caring and funny teacher. She grew up in a strictly religious household and like most of us, learned the basics from classic 90s cartoon book “Where Did I Come From?”  Other than being completely gorgeous to look at and divine to listen to, she’s an experienced burlesque and circus performer with 20+ years under her belt with a variety of shows and tours.

It’s the sex education class that all adults need and the details that are missing in the blank style teaching in schools in Australia. It’s not at all gory, seedy or dirty as some may expect- it is a lesson and sharing of information and techniques that all can use and enjoy.

She’ll teach you the correct names and pronunciations for each part, explain the glands and how it all works, shows you anatomically correct images and models, and spell it out the secrets to good sex and masturbation in an easy to remember acronym: Consent, Understanding, Nurturing and Timing. Sex has a beginning, middle and end, of flirting, intimacy and bonding. The show is very well researched and quotes research and sources such as OMGyes.com, and the show is bold, honest, and open with its attendees. It makes no one feel ashamed, dirty or uncomfortable, and the audience absolutely lap it up and have a great time learning more.

A girlfriend and I went to this for some fun and a laugh, but as two females under 30, we actually learned some things- it shows the gaps in the education system when we grew up. It’s both hilarious and educational, and goes down well with a cocktail and an open mind. It’s honest, it’s heart-warming and hopeful, and it’s easy to follow and understand. There is fun in word play, props and

Sadly, this informative and fun seminar finished on the 9th of April, but keep an eye out for Rural Ranga and Strawberry Siren’s future shows at www.ruralranga.com  and www.strawberrysiren.com.
